As can be seen in the photos, some of the
drywall pieces are a little nicked up. This is because the pieces were
from odd-lot small pieces. The scrapes will be covered with subsequent
coats of drywall joint compound. This is typical of a real drywall DIY
job - you often must cover scrapes, dents and nicks.
This step went fairly well. The
kids seemed surprised that the tape went on so nicely. The joint is far
from finished however.

The kids needed to learn how to hold the
knife at the correct angle and apply enough pressure. Also, they
were a were shy about putting the mud on thick enough. I told them
that most would be taken off with the knife. They did pretty well.

A slightly wider coat was applied. Again,
the kids needed to learn how to hold the knife at the correct angle and
apply enough pressure. Also, they started filling the screw
depressions. In a few cases, the screws needed to be set a little
deeper.
Step 5 - Apply Two Side Coats of Compound Over Tape
- Photos Shown In Step 6
A coat about 6 inches wide was applied on
each side of the coat of Step 4, leaving about 4" uncoated in the
middle. The middle is over coated in Step 6. Also, more mud is placed
over screw depressions as needed. Since the photos for Steps 5 and 6
look nearly identical, only the photos of Step 6 are shown.

Middle - Click on each photo to enlarge

A 6" wide coat is applied in the middle.
This coat bridges the two previous coats and the end result is an
extra-wide coat of 14-16" in width. At this point, the kids are
really getting the hang of taking off the compound with a nice smooth
stroke, leaving a thin level coat. Any leftover screw depressions are
filled as needed.
